Synopsis
Dev D has an encore feel to it. It is something you haven’t seen before. And credit goes to writer-director Anurag Kashyap for giving audiences a film to enjoy in spite of its numerous versions before. Anurag Kashyap has turned Sarat Chandra’s novel on its head, giving the word interpretation a whole new meaning. Anurag has gone all out to dish out something out-of-the-ordinary and the man deserves credit for that. After innumerable false starts (Paanch, Black Friday, No Smoking), it takes immense guts to go out there and stick to your convictions, irrespective of commercial considerations. And Anurag has done just that! The severe spanking Anurag Kashyap received from critics and audience alike for No Smoking, propelled the director to delve deep into his creative reserves to come up with a rabbit out of his hat. He gives us Dev D. Every character stands out; every scene is a dream. Kashyap takes ordinary moments and peppers it with rappers to skillfully drive home the point with lyrics to match the mood. The music and background score are just perfect. Dev D is awesome. It’s big bang for your bucks! The reprise one of Hindi cinema’s most-remade story lines would require both courage and an audacious new vision. Director Anurag Kashyap is equipped with both. And he gives as much as he takes from this classic tale of a love lost and pined for. Dev D is a stylish, adventurous interpretation that gives an old story a contemporary edge and pushes the boundaries of Hindi cinema. If you like your cinema far removed from the mainstream, then don’t miss this one!
